Our Heritage Sows

Back in March we picked up 5 heritage breed piglets that at the time we had designs on sending to 'freezer camp' in the fall. They are Berkshire/Tamworth crosses which are a combination of old English breeds that are known for their excellent flavour and fantastic bacon.

Over the months, our gals have grown nicely and we have decided to breed them. We became a part of PigTrace Canada last month so we can raise future offspring for processing and they can legally be part of the food supply. This means we have a premises ID and can tag our pigs so that they can go to the processor. Without ear tags or a shoulder tattoo, you cannot get your pigs slaughtered/processed at a government inspected facility which in turn means you cannot sell their meat. It is all so official!
